There are legitimate reasons for disliking someone and then there are the times you feel a visceral, unfounded disdain for a person—usually a successful female celebrity. Taylor Swift, like Anne Hathaway, seems to rub people the wrong way, myself included, and has been the subject of quite a bit of scrutiny as a result. While taking to our keyboards to spout venom because Taylor's work or persona just doesn't sit well with us (or because we feel annoyed that she's so successful) isn't making the Internet a better place, taking issue with her actions and words is a valid outlet for the icky feeling she gives so many of us. Luckily, Taylor Swift has been proving a lot of people right by saying and doing really unattractive things of late. Here are the reasons people seem to dislike T Swizzle. Some are more valid than others.
She dates lots of dudes: Invalid
So what?! What else are your twenties for if not hooking up and breaking up?
She sings about her love life: Invalid
You know who else sings about heartache? Every. Other. Musician on the planet. What makes Taylor different? Is it because she's a woman and you don't particularly like that "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" is stuck in your head right now? That sounds like a personal problem.
She dates both older and younger men: Invalid
So what she's at a special time in her life in which her dating age bracket spans almost 20 years. Good for her! Poke fun at her all you want but don't try to say you'd turn down a barely legal Harry Styles or the hot, 30-something Jake Gyllenhaal if they came a knockin'.
She's wildly successful: Invalid
Girlfriend knows what works in the music industry and owns it over and over again. We should celebrate her accomplishments, not tear her down for them. Don't like her music? Don't buy it.
She openly mocked Harry Styles during her Grammy's performance: Valid
Finally! Taylor Swift proves our irrational disdain right! During her post-breakup performance at the Grammys, Taylor faked a British accent as a pretty obvious and public jab at her latest ex-boyfriend. And how did Harry react? He only had nice words for the singer. Way to take the high road, Harry.
Thank goodness for this feature that legitimizes our somewhat irrational dislike for Taylor.
She implied Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are going to hell: Valid
Taylor is receiving some backlash today for her Vanity Fair interview in which she addresses Amy Poehler and Tina Fey's playful mocking of her at the Golden Globes. Apparently Taylor can dish it out but she can't take some gentle needling from two of the funniest and empowering women in Hollywood. Also, if Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are going to hell, well in the words of Liz Lemon, I want to go to there.
She's kind of a hypocrite: Valid
Taylor discusses "Mean Girl" incidents and the Golden Globes moment in her Vanity Fair feature, quoting Katie Couric as saying "There's a special place in hell for women who don't help women." This is coming from a woman who has made millions off her songs that feature girl-on-girl competition and slut-shaming lyrics. Plus, did you see how she reacted when she lost to Adele at the Globes? Puhlease. Taylor Swift isn't exactly the picture of feminist sisterhood.
